Sadly there are no games or Roll-ups scheduled for this month
There is precious little to celebrate in the sporting calendar at the moment, but birthdays are the exception, they cannot be put off.
Chinnor Short Mat Bowls Club started in April 2000, at Mill Lane School, and within a few weeks it moved to the Village Hall, in May 2000, so this year sees its 20th Anniversary.
The club has developed hugely over the years, from the raw beginnings, when everyone was learning and developing their skills, to recent years when we have been victorious in all of the leagues and tournaments.
Due to the Covid19 ‘lockdown’, this year’s 2 Mat Winter League had to be suspended before all the matches had been played. At that time we had attained an almost unassailable lead, having played 16 of the 20 matches, and had gained an impressive 122 points.
In the Single Mat league, we had won our half of the draw, (14 matches) and the final against the winners of the other half was scheduled to be played at the end of March but unfortunately that did not take place. As we were the previous holders of this trophy however, we were not about to give it up!
The bowls club over the years has not just been about winning trophies. As well as the competitive side of the sport, our club ‘roll-ups’ also provide a social structure, with the opportunity to bowl two or three times a week.
Almost anyone can play basic short mat bowls. It is light exercise, played indoors, winter and summer, and most importantly it takes place here in Chinnor in our own Village Hall.
So our 20th Anniversary celebrations have been put on hold, but next year, we will be 21, our coming of age, we can wait until then.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Chinnor Short Mat Bowls Club. A.H.
